African American Lives Documentary

This Sunday morning, February 17, 2008 I woke up with Henry Louis Gates, Junior, on WHYY program African American Lives 2. This program brings African American individuals, some famous and other less famous, to uncover their past going beyond the racial segregation, beyond slavery to uncover their past through family and DNA history.
Using a serious historical research based on documents and records, the family tree and events are discovered and discussed. The whole is completed by a DNA analysis to retrace their African origin to link these Men and Women to a tribe, a region and a land.
This documentary is so far the best I saw about the importance of knowing who one is and being proud of it all, including the less flattering facts. I believe every African American family should have a copy of this documentary at home, encourage their kids to watch it, to ask questions and be curious about their own origin. Because, I believe the best of the prides is the one based on knowledge of self.
